Proper Lubrication Techniques for Vacuum Components

Lubrication can improve the operation and service life of certain vacuum components, but it must be approached differently than lubrication in ordinary mechanical equipment. In a vacuum environment, excess grease or the wrong oil does more than create a mess. It can add gas load, migrate through the system, collect particles, contaminate sensitive surfaces, damage elastomers, or prevent the chamber from reaching its target pressure.

Considerations When Using Grease in a Vacuum System

There are many considerations when utilizing grease within a vacuum system. Often grease is used for the lubrication of o-rings, mechanical components, and in some cases to prevent corrosion. However, it is highly recommended to consider whether a grease is even necessary for each application. The presence of grease within a vacuum system can increase the gas load on the system and can be a source of collecting foreign debris.
