Dry Scroll Pumps

A dry scroll vacuum pump is prized due to its efficient design that allows portability and miniaturization.

Scroll Vacuum Pumps are low maintenence, corrosion resistent pumps that require no oil.

In the world of vacuum systems, dry scroll pumps hold a valuable place as one of the few pumps that are traditionally employed in low (i.e. 1000 mbar to 1 mbar) and medium (i.e. 1 mbar to 10-3 mbar) systems, and yet are now
also frequently being employed as fore (or backing) pumps in high and ultra-high (i.e. 10-3 to 10-12 mbar) vacuum systems.

Dry scroll pumps are an excellent alternative to rotary vane pumps where oil free pumping is desirable.

Scroll vacuum pumps are a type of compressive (mechanical) pumps.

It is recommended that the scrolls be changed every 40,000 hours of use. Eliminating the oil eliminates hydrocarbon contamination.

Dry scroll pumps offer proven dry, clean vacuum solutions for a wide range of applications.

While they can have higher up-front costs, the lifetime operation costs are much lower.

In common with every other type of vacuum pump, dry scroll pumps have a number of advantages and — remarkably few though, not insignificant — disadvantages, as well as limitations which need to be considered before a definitive decision is made to employ them in a vacuum system.

Small and portable dry scroll pumps are perfect for incorporating into OEM systems.

A dry scroll pump, despite its size, can achieve vacuums as high as 7.0×10-3 torr, with pumping speeds of up to 500 L per minute; a system as small as 14 × 7 × 6 inches can still achieve 2.5×10^-1 torr at 60 L per minute.

These pumps have been introduced into EMs in recent years as a replacement of conventional oil-filled rotary pumps when an absolutely oil-free pumping system is needed.

However, perhaps their most significant advantages are that although they have a relatively high initial cost, their operating costs are low because they do not require oil (which also makes them environmentally friendly).

Because dry scroll vacuum pumps are available in a design that is simpler than other reciprocal pumps, scroll pumps more reliable and less likely to suffer functional failure.

Scroll pumps handle water vapor better than most types of pumps and make significantly less noise during operation.

Part of their attraction is that, being a “dry” pump, there is no risk of contamination, although to counter this significant characteristic, it must be acknowledged that they are intolerant to particles and, in addition, there is a potential of particle generation due to tip seal wear.

Many pump designs can become bulky, noisy, and require spring suspension in order to operate.
