Televac 7B Penning Magnetron Cold Cathode Gauge

Starting at: $520.00

Televac 7B Penning Magnetron Cold Cathode Gauge

The 7B Penning Magnetron Cold Cathode Passive Sensor has a measurement range from 1*10-8 up to 1*10-3 Torr. It indirectly\ measures absolute pressure by ionizing gas in the presence of a magnetic field. Unlike hot filament sensors, the 7B is resistant to inrushes of gas and does not have a filament that can burn out. The sensor design allows for easy disassembly enabling quick cleaning for an extended lifetime.

The 7B can be operated by the Televac® MX200 vacuum controller, or the MX7B Cold Cathode Active Vacuum Gauge. The MX200 will automatically operate the cold cathode to provide a full range vacuum measurement solution when the 7B is used in conjunction with rough vacuum sensors like the 2A thermocouple or 4A convection.

Televac 7B Penning Magnetron Cold Cathode Gauge

The Televac 7B Cold Cathode Gauge is a rugged, dependable Penning-style magnetron sensor designed to measure high and ultra-high vacuum pressures down into the 10-8 Torr range. Known for its durability and reliability, the 7B has been a proven solution across research labs, industrial vacuum systems, and OEM equipment where long life, repeatable performance, and wide range capability are required.

Key Advantages

  • Wide measurement range: Typically from 1×10-8 Torr up to 10-3 Torr depending on system conditions and controller configuration.
  • Rugged sensor head: Stainless-steel construction and robust internal design extend sensor life in demanding environments.
  • Gas-independent readings: Measures pressure independent of gas type (though calibration is usually done for nitrogen/air).
  • Long service life: Unlike hot-filament gauges, no heated filaments to burn out or fail from vibration and contamination.
  • Compatible with MX200: Fully supported by the Televac MX200 Gauge Controller and other Televac control units.

Applications

The 7B gauge is the go-to solution for processes that require high-vacuum measurement but cannot risk the fragility of a hot-filament ionization gauge. Common applications include:

  • Thin-film coating (PVD, CVD, sputtering, and evaporation systems)
  • Analytical instruments (mass spectrometers, surface science tools)
  • High-vacuum ovens and furnaces
  • Research accelerators and labs
  • General high-vacuum process equipment

Technical Highlights

  • Pressure Range: ~1×10-8 Torr to 10-3 Torr (depending on controller)
  • Mounting: NW25/KF25 standard flange connection
  • Materials: Stainless-steel body with durable electrode assembly
  • Ignition voltage: Applied by controller; auto-start circuits available in MX200 and legacy controllers
  • Maintenance: Field-serviceable with simple cleaning procedures to restore sensitivity

Advantages Over Hot-Filament Gauges

Cold cathode gauges like the Televac 7B provide several benefits compared to hot-filament Bayard-Alpert ion gauges:

  1. No filament burnout: Extended life with fewer consumables, making it cost-effective over time.
  2. Rugged in harsh systems: Tolerates vibration, contamination, and pump oil backstreaming better.
  3. Lower maintenance: Fewer parts to replace, with straightforward cleaning cycles.

Integration with Televac Systems

The 7B connects seamlessly to Televac MX200 controllers and legacy units like the MX200’s predecessors. Each sensor head delivers accurate, repeatable measurements when paired with Televac electronics and cables, available from High Vac Depot’s Televac catalog.

For complete coverage from atmosphere to high vacuum, consider pairing the 7B with a Televac 4A convection gauge or a thermocouple gauge on the same MX200 controller.

Best Practices for Using Cold Cathode Gauges

  • Start under vacuum: Avoid frequent ignitions at atmosphere to extend electrode life.
  • Clean periodically: If readings drift, a simple solvent cleaning can restore accuracy.
  • Use with backing gauges: Always pair with convection or diaphragm gauges for reliable measurement at higher pressures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pressure range does the 7B cover?

Typical measurement capability is from 1×10-8 Torr to 10-3 Torr, depending on system conditions and the controller used.

Does the 7B require a separate controller?

Yes. The 7B connects to a compatible controller such as the MX200, which provides ignition voltage, readout, and analog/digital outputs.

How is the 7B maintained?

The sensor is field serviceable. Routine cleaning of the electrodes with solvent restores function, unlike filament-based gauges which require replacements.
