A rotary vane pump is a positive-displacement pump that consists of vanes mounted to a rotor that rotates inside a cavity.
Corrosion protection – oil protects all components from corrosion and reaction with the gas
The fluid enters the pockets created by the vanes, the rotor, the cam and the side plate.
When the rotor rotates and fluid enters the pump, the centrifugal force, the hydraulic pressure and/or the push rods push the vanes towards the housing walls.
Oil Sealed – oil provides an effective seal enabling an ultimate vacuum up to <0,5 mbar (abs.)
Due to centrifugal force, these vanes slide out and form chambers between themselves and the housing.
The pumped medium is trapped inside these chambers. During further rotation, their volume is constantly reduced.
The vanes or blades fit into the rotor cavities.
The vane pumps are known for their dry-priming, easy maintenance and good suction characteristics throughout the life of the pump.
The design consists of a rotor, which is mounted eccentrically inside a cylindrical housing or stator.

A rotary vane pump can also be used alone when high vacuum is not required and slower pump-down is acceptable.
Lubrication prevents wear – Aluminium blades, rotor, housing and housing cover bearings are lubricated with oil making them virtually wear-free.

A rotary vane vacuum pump in its simplest definition is a type of pump technology that enables the compression of air inside the pump chamber to create suction for the removal of air molecules from a vessel or area.
Like all positive displacement pumps, the flow rate is always directly proportional to the speed.
In a cylindrical housing, a rotor with several vanes is mounted eccentrically.
They are also referred to as a “backing” pump when used in combination with a booster pump, or with both a booster and secondary (“high vacuum”) pump, typically a diffusion style.
Rotary Vane Pumps
A rotary vane vacuum pump relies on a rotating mechanism with sliding vanes that direct vapor flow through the pump. These pumps are available in a wide range of pumping speeds, and multistage vacuum pumps are able to attain ultimate pressure values that are quite low. Most rotary vane pumps, whether belt driven or directly driven by a shaft from the motor, use oil that lubricates the mechanism and provides a seal that permits the pumps to reach the design vacuum levels. Because chemical vapors common in laboratories eventually contaminate the pump oil, hybrid pumps (combining rotary vane and diaphragm pump components) and oil-less rotary vane pumps have been introduced in recent years to reduce service demands. The pump’s performance can also be extended with products that employ fluoropolymer or nitrogen plasma-treated components for corrosion resistance. Finally, many rotary vane vacuum pumps are compatible with gas ballasts that evacuate vapors that can compromise pump oil. Nonetheless, all rotary vane pumps are generally more susceptible to corrosion than dry, diaphragm pump technologies.

In some cases these vanes can have variable length and/or be tensioned to maintain contact with the walls as the pump rotates.
The rotor is sealed in the cam by two side plates.
Despite the different configurations, most vane pumps operate according to the same general principle as described below.
In addition, this technology is available with both direct and magnet drive.
Operation as a compressor is also possible.
Every rotary vane vacuum pump is based on the same standard components.
This latter option removes the shaft seal by introducing a magnetic coupling.
As a result, they maintain peak performance longer than competing machinery.
They are considered less suitable than other vacuum pumps for high-viscosity and high-pressure fluids, and are complex to operate.
Blades, mounted inside the rotor, move in and out due to centrifugal force following the internal surface of the housing.
The rotor sits close to the cam wall to form a crescent-shaped cavity.
Oil sealed rotary vane pumps (aka rotary vane pumps) are the primary pumps on most vacuum systems used in the heat treatment industry.
As the rotor continues to spin, the vanes sweep the fluid to the opposite side of the crescent where it is squeezed through the cam discharge holes as the vane approaches the point of the crescent.
Vane pumps are available with different types of vane: sliding, flexible, oscillating, rotating and external vanes.
Rotary vane pumps never experience internal metal-to-metal contact, so they are able to self-compensate for wear.
Cleaning effect – The oil cleans the compressor chamber of impurities and prevents damage extending pump life and performance.
Thereby, the pumped medium is compressed and transported to the outlet.

Rotary vane vacuum pumps are available in single- and two-stage versions and can be operated with different types of lubrication or as dry-running.
The fluid then exits through the discharge port.
They can endure short periods of dry operation, and are considered good for low-viscosity fluids.
