Televac MX7B Cold Cathode Active Vacuum Gauge
The MX7B is an active vacuum gauge (also called an analog vacuum gauge or a digital vacuum gauge) featuring the well-known Televac 7B cold cathode ionization gauge. This gauge provides robust, contamination resistant measurement from 10-3 to 10-8 Torr. The Penning ionization gauge is easy to disassemble, making gauge replacement and cleaning stress-free while also saving you time and money.
Our engineers designed this cold cathode ionization gauge with end users in mind, with a particular focus on heat treat and vacuum furnace end users who wanted full range vacuum measurement from a durable and cleanable digital vacuum gauge or analog vacuum gauge. The MX7B Penning ionization gauge is designed for use with our digital micron gauges, the MX4A or MX2A, for a combined range of 10-8 Torr to 1000 Torr. This system is also a drop-in replacement for the Televac MP7ER.

Televac MX7B Active Cold-Cathode Vacuum Gauge
The Televac MX7B Active Cold-Cathode Gauge is a rugged, filament-free vacuum sensor optimized for reliable measurement in the high to ultra-high vacuum (HV/UHV) range—from approximately 10⁻⁷ Torr down to 10⁻⁹ Torr—with integrated electronics for seamless system integration. Built for performance and longevity, the MX7B delivers consistent readings and long service intervals, making it ideal for demanding industrial and research environments.
Why Choose the MX7B?
- Cold-cathode design: Filament-free and durable, it’s less prone to failure from contamination or vibration than hot-filament gauges.
- Integrated active output: Equipped with internal electronics for a clean 0-10 V analog output—eliminating the need for separate controllers.
- High reliability: Stable performance across long run cycles—suitable for bake-out, research, and continuous process monitoring.
- Compact and sturdy: Stainless-steel body with standard flange for easy mounting in tight spaces or existing systems.
- Gas-independent measurement: Cold-cathode technology provides near-gas-independent readings, boosting repeatability in mixed-gas environments.
Best Applications
- Surface science & UHV research systems where long-term vacuum accuracy is essential.
- Thin-film deposition (PVD/CVD/UHV sources) requiring stable, deep-vacuum monitoring.
- Ion pump diagnostics in UHV systems requiring continuous pressure feedback.
- Accelerator and beamline vacuum control applications demanding sensitivity and durability.
Technical Highlights
- Measurement Range: ~10⁻⁷ Torr to ~10⁻⁹ Torr (dependent on operating conditions and system conductance).
- Output: Built-in 0-10 V analog signal—ready for DAQ, PLC, or direct panel monitoring.
- Construction: Heavy-duty stainless-steel housing with precision electrode assembly for longevity.
- Maintenance: Filament-free—minimal upkeep. Occasional cleaning recommended in high-contamination environments.
- Mounting: Standard flange for integration into existing UHV systems or experimental setups.
Cold-Cathode vs. Hot-Filament Ion Gauges
- Filament-free longevity: No heated components means fewer failure points and less susceptibility to contamination.
- Repeatable readings: Stable discharge performance gives better consistency over long test cycles.
- Slightly lower basal sensitivity: Ion gauges may reach 10⁻¹¹ Torr—but the MX7B offers a reliable, low-risk alternative for many UHV tasks.
Integration & System Pairing
Use the MX7B as a standalone active gauge with its built-in output—or combine it with the Televac MX200 Controller for multi-gauge monitoring, set-point alarms, and digital I/O. For full-range measurement, pair the MX7B with rough and medium-range gauges like the MX4A or CC10 Wide-Range Gauge.

Usage Recommendations
- Vacuum start-up: Begin operation under vacuum to ensure stable ignition and longevity.
- Periodic cleaning: In dusty or reactive environments, a light clean helps maintain sensitivity.
- Bake-out suitability: Able to withstand elevated temperatures—ideal for UHV chamber conditioning.
FAQs
What vacuum range does the MX7B measure?
Approximately from 10⁻⁷ to 10⁻⁹ Torr, depending on your chamber setup and system conductance.
Do I need an external controller?
No—its integrated electronics provide direct analog output. However, pairing with an MX200 unlocks enhanced features like logging and set-point control.
Is it maintenance-intensive?
Not at all. Being cold-cathode, it avoids filament failure. Occasional electrode cleaning is advised for dusty environments, but overall upkeep is minimal.
