Televac 7E Double Inverted Magnetron Cold Cathode Gauge
The Televac 7E cold cathode gauge (also called a vacuum pressure gauge or cold cathode ionization gauge) has a measurement range from 10-8 Torr up to 10-2 Torr. This vacuum gauge makes indirect absolute pressure measurements by ionizing gas in the presence of a magnetic field. Unlike hot filament vacuum gauges, the 7E cold cathode gauge is cleanable, contamination resistant, and isn’t as easily damaged by inrushes of gas.
The design of this vacuum gauge allows for easy disassembly, enabling quick cleaning and extended use. The 7E cold cathode ionization gauge can be operated by the Televac MX200 rack-mountable controller or as an active gauge via the MP7ER. Any vacuum controller will automatically operate the cold cathode to provide a full-range vacuum measurement solution when the 7E is used in conjunction with rough vacuum sensors like the 2A or 4A. Active vacuum gauges can also be combined using the MX2A/MX4A and MX7B to provide full range vacuum measurement with the 7E cold cathode ionization gauge.

Televac 7E Double-Inverted Magnetron Cold-Cathode Gauge
The Televac 7E Double-Inverted Magnetron Cold-Cathode Gauge is a premium ultra-high vacuum (UHV) sensor designed to deliver reliable, filament-free pressure readings down to the low 10⁻⁹ Torr range. Its innovative double-inverted magnetron (“sandwich”) design offers faster response, higher signal stability, and exceptional durability—making it an ideal choice for demanding high-vacuum processes in research, thin-film deposition, ion pumps, and accelerator systems.
Notable Advantages
- Ultra-high sensitivity: Extends measurement capability into the UHV region (~10⁻⁹ Torr), outperforming standard cold-cathode gauges (~10⁻⁸ Torr).
- Rapid, stable signals: The unique double-inverted magnetron configuration supports consistent, low-noise discharge across pressure transitions.
- Filament-free operation: Minimizes contamination and eliminates burn-out risks common with hot-filament gauges.
- Rugged construction: Stainless-steel housing and robust internal electrode assembly ensure reliable operation under thermal cycling and bake-out conditions.
- Wide compatibility: Compatible with gauge controllers that supply ignition voltage—such as the Televac MX200 and legacy Televac systems.
Ideal Applications
- UHV research labs: Surface science, thin-film deposition (PVD/CVD), and UHV bake-out chambers.
- Ion pump monitoring: Achieve precise UHV feedback in pump-controlled systems and beamline assemblies.
- Accelerator and synchrotron instrumentation: High-sensitivity vacuum diagnostics for beam-line integrity.
- Mass spectrometry and analytical systems: Applications demanding ultra-clean, fast, and repeatable pressure readings.
Technical Highlights
- Pressure Range: Approximately ~10⁻⁹ Torr to ~10⁻³ Torr, depending on the controller and system environment.
- Gauge Type: Double-inverted magnetron cold-cathode (dual-tube) design.
- Materials: Stainless-steel housing with precision electrodes for extended service life.
- Ignition & Operation: Requires high-voltage ignition with automatic discharge sustain from the controller.
- Maintenance: Filament-free and low-maintenance; occasional cleaning may enhance longevity in contaminated environments.
Cold-Cathode vs. Ion Gauges
- Filament-free vs. fragile filaments: The 7E avoids filament failure risks and contamination—critical in UHV and sensitive processes.
- Better long-term stability: Enhanced discharge consistency via double-inverted design delivers more reliable readings over time.
- Slightly lower sensitivity: Ion gauges may measure deeper (~10⁻¹⁰ Torr), but the 7E’s robustness and simplicity make it preferable for many systems.
Integration & System Pairing
Pair the 7E with a capable controller—like the MX200 Gauge Controller—which provides ignition voltage, signal processing, and I/O outputs. For full-range vacuum control, combine it with a CC10 Wide-Range Gauge or a Convection Gauge to cover higher pressures efficiently.

Usage Recommendations
- Pre-vacuum start: Initiate at moderate vacuum to reduce stress on the discharge mechanism.
- Bake-out compatibility: The 7E tolerates high-temperature conditioning, ideal for UHV chamber preparation.
- Periodic cleaning: A gentle solvent wipe may preserve sensitivity in dusty or complex environments.
Frequently Asked Questions
How low can the 7E measure?
Roughly down to ~10⁻⁹ Torr—actual performance depends on controller and chamber conductance.
Is this gauge maintenance-free?
Practically yes—it’s filament-free and resilient. Minimal maintenance is needed, though occasional cleaning improves longevity under heavy-duty cycles.
What controller do I need?
A controller that provides ignition voltage and discharge sustain function, such as the Televac MX200, is required for operation.
